What a Diff’rence…

“What a Diff’rence a Day Made” (also recorded as “What a Difference a Day Makes”) is a popular song originally written in Spanish by María Grever, a Mexican songwriter, in 1934 with the title “Cuando vuelva a tu lado”. The English translation was written by Stanley Adams and the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra recorded it that same year, and their version was a #5 hit.

Many artists have recorded it since then, however, Dinah Washington’s version is the most famous. She won a Grammy Award in 1959 for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance with this song. Her version was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. It also earned her first top ten pop hit, reaching number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Trio Los Panchos and Eydie Gormé

[Verse 1]
What a diff’rence a day made
Twenty-four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers
Mm, where there used to be rain
My yesterday was blue, dear
Today I’m a part of you, dear
My lonely nights are through, dear
Since you said you were mine

[Verse 2]
Lord, what a diff’rence a day makes
There’s a rainbow before me
Skies above can’t be stormy
Since that moment of bliss
That thrilling kiss
It’s heaven when you
Find romance on your menu
What a diff’rence a day made
And the difference is you
