Tony Bennett, the legendary crooner, whose dulcet tones enchanted audiences for decades, passed away at his home in Manhattan on Friday, July 21, 2023, at the age of 96. The NY Times obituary describes him as “a singer whose melodic clarity, jazz-influenced phrasing, audience-embracing persona and warm, deceptively simple interpretations of musical standards helped spread the American songbook around the world and won him generations of fans.”

Tony Bennett’s career began in the early 1950s when he signed with Columbia Records and soon gained popularity, having his first No. 1 hit “Because of You” in 1951, followed by other trademark songs like “Rags to Riches” and “Strangers in Paradise” in 1953. For more than 70 years he delighted audiences in hundreds of concerts, released more than 150 recordings, sold over 60 million records, won 20 Grammy Awards, and is the holder of multiple Guinness World Records.

In 1996, he performed for Nelson Mandela, then the president of South Africa, during his state visit to England. He also sang at the White House for John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton, and at Buckingham Palace at Queen Elizabeth II’s 50th anniversary jubilee.

Tony Bennett first met Lady Gaga in 2011, and they quickly formed a close relationship which resulted in two Grammy-winning duet albums: Cheek to Cheek and Love for Sale.

In 2014, they teamed up for their joint album “Cheek to Cheek.” This unexpected pairing of jazz and pop showcased the exceptional chemistry between the two artists. Three of his paintings are part of the Smithsonian Museums permanent collections, including his portrait of his friend Duke Ellington that became part of the National Portrait Gallery’s collection in 2009.
